GOD SAID, "HA!"  Send This Review to a Friend

Julia Sweeney is wonderful company. You find that out quickly as she talks directly to you in her one-woman film, based on her stage show. Her writing is witty and her delivery has the sharpness of a relaxed stand-up comic, although her subject range is serious.

Sweeney (writer, star and director) sets the mood by recounting how she was at last feeling free and ready to enjoy life unencumbered by responsibility. But God had other ideas, she informs us, describing how her brother became fatally ill and had to move in with her and her parents descended upon the scene.

Sweeney is able to mine humor from tragedy. That's a great gift. She does so without losing her humanity and is a rare performer who can balance the dreadful with the delightful. It's great to spend time with her. Although the film is obviously stage-oriented, Transferring it works without fancy camerawork. Sweeney's presence is enough. A Miramax release.
