IS THAT YOU?  Send This Review to a Friend

One of the saddest things in life is regretting what might have happened if a different road had been taken. For 60-year-old just-fired Israeli film projectionist Ronnie, a nagging regret is losing the Rachel of his youth. He still harbors a love for her. Acting on his feelings, he sets off from Israel to find her in America, where he has a brother. “Is That You?” was written, directed and produced by Dani Menkin.

Alon Aboutboul as Ronnie isn’t the most handsome of men, but there is an understated charisma about him and it doesn’t take long for us to hope he finds his Rachel. Along the way in his quest he meets Myla, a filmmaker doggedly but sympathetically played by Naruna Kaplan de Mocedo, who is making a documentary about regrets in people’s lives.

Ronnie is a natural subject and she trots along with him in hope he will hit pay dirt for a moving reunion scene. Their interaction en route is sometimes amusing. But the task looks formidable, as leads Ronnie has turn out wrong when he knocks on doors only to encounter confusion and learn that the ubiquitous Rachel is still not at hand.

But the film, with the road trip including Canada, releases an emotional pull when he finally does find Rachel (Suzanne Sadler). What will happen when he makes the connection? You’ll have to see “Is That You?” to find out—no spoiler here. Reviewed August 26, 2016.
