SUMMERTIME  Send This Review to a Friend

How ya gonna keep her down on the farm after she’s loved Paree? The paraphrase of the well-known song poses the question for “Summertime,” a French film about women’s rights and lesbian romance directed by Catherine Corsini with two appealing stars. Corsini also co-wrote the screenplay with Laurette Polmanss.

In the early 1970s Izïa Higelin as Delphine, a country-gal in Southern France, breaks away in hope of establishing a life in Paris, where she meets the fascinating Carole, played by the very attractive Cécile de France. In addition to being a professor teaching Spanish literature, Carole is politically active in a movement fighting for equal treatment of women.

The political background soon fades into sparks between Delphine and Carole, each smitten with the other for diverse reasons. Delphine, who we eventually learn has had a lesbian relationship back home even though she is supposed to get married to a local lad, makes moves on Carole, who has a boyfriend. Carole, intrigued by Delphine, succumbs to blissful intimacy.

But when Delphine’s father takes ill, a sense of duty calls her back to help run the family farm. How can the romance work out? Carole visits the farm, ostensibly as just a friend. But they are having sex wherever they can, and Delphine’s mother, sternly portrayed by Noemie Lvovsky, quickly catches on and is revolted.

Carole makes an honest attempt to fit into farm life, trying to assist with all of the chores. If Delphine can’t be in Paris, Carole will try to adapt to the country. But we can see that it is an impossible fit and Carole pressures Delphine to return to Paris.

The relationship becomes somewhat of a countrified soap opera, but the sexual attraction and the look of the film hold one’s interest as we wait to see how it all works out while appreciating the performances of the film’s impressive stars. A Strand Releasing release. Reviewed July 22, 2016.
