ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO  Send This Review to a Friend

Put the word porn in a title and there’s immediate interest, as evidenced by all those wanting to see “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Kevin Smith, the film is probably the dirtiest main stream film around. It is also one of the silliest.

When the humor is totally outrageous and leering, the film can be quite funny. But the effort at a romantic story undercuts the comedy and renders the effort absurd. The plot concerns Seth Rogen as Zack and Elizabeth Banks as Miri, long time friends who live together platonically without a thought of romantic involvement. Hard-pressed financially, Zack comes up with the idea of making a porn movie, an inspiration engendered when someone secretly filmed a shot of Miri wearing “granny panties” and posted it on YouTube, resulting in an onrush of hits.

What fun the film contains occurs in the planning, casting, and creation of the porn flick, with use of a few actual porn stars in the mix. The gimmick: Zack and Miri wind up having to be their own porn couple in front of a camera and thereby—are you ready?—fall in love. Banks is always an actress worth watching, Rogen is occasionally funny and the film gets a comic lift from Craig Robinson, who becomes the producer eagerly ogling those who audition for a role. A Weinstein Company release.
