MEET JOE BLACK Send This Review to a Friend
What would be flimsy at even an hour and a half has been stretched to a three hour debacle. The 1934 "Death Takes a Holiday," based on the same play that spawned this version, only ran 90 minutes. Brad Pitt shows up as Death, alias Joe Black, occupying the body of a handsome young man who, just before being killed in a car accident, made a romantic impression on the daughter ( Claire Forlani) of a tycoon (Anthony Hopkins) whom Death has come to claim. There's an awful lot of talk, talk talk before Death walks off into yonder with his by now prepared and resigned charge, then returns to remain on earth to get the girl he has already bedded. All clear? The less time spent on this doomed nonsense directed by Martin Brest the better. A Universal release.
