Based on a true story, “Pride” is an uplifting tale of how an inner city swimming team in Philadelphia overcomes prejudice against it and builds its reputation, thanks to the perseverance of coach Jim Ellis. The triumph has special meaning for the youths who take part, as it does for their mentor. It also is a satisfying victory for all who favor equal opportunity in sports as elsewhere.

But as often happens with such achievement films that push the right buttons to touch your emotions, “Pride” has a thoroughly conventional ring to it. It bristles with sincerity, but it resembles other such films and never rises to artistic heights that would distinguish it.

Still, it delivers within the confines of what it is. Terrence Howard gives a likable performance as Ellis, and director Sunu Gonera builds the requisite suspense in the competition as the teammates overcome insults and are pressed by their coach into giving their all. A Lionsgate release.
