VOLVER  Send This Review to a Friend

A coup of the New York Film Festival was getting “Volver,” the latest film by Spanish director Pedro Almadóvar. The writer-director has handled a dazzling drama with his customary gusto, and the larger-than-life performance by Penelope Cruz set off talk about her as a potential Oscar nominee. The film is certainly one of the major foreign language entries of the year, and one of the best in any language.

In “Volver” associations are complex. There is a mother-daughter relationship between Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) and her daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo) that binds them even more by a killing. There is also the relationship between Raimunda and her assumed dead mother Irene (Carmen Maura), as well as relationships from the past that govern the present, when family secrets begin to be revealed.

One can rob the viewer of discovery pleasures by discussing the film in excessive detail. Almadóvar takes us on an exciting ride through his elaborate plot with a series of surprises en route. We never know quite what to expect, although the drama sets the mind working overtime to discern what’s coming. It is best to just relax with what is served.

Cruz is a revelation in this film. She has never been high on my list for acting achievement. For example, in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” she didn’t convince me that she was Greek. In the Italian “Don’t Move,” for which she won plaudits, I found her way over the top. But in "Volver,” she is absolutely superb. Apart from being comfortable in her own language, she moves away from the pretty actress image to being a fascinating, extremely earthy character. She fiercely assumes her role of mother and splendidly conveys other elements in this major role. It is a pleasure to note her dramatic triumph.

The entire cast does the film credit in this film that is ultra intense and very entertaining. Almadóvar is in top form here, and so is Cruz. A Sony Pictures Classics release.
