RUSHMORE Send This Review to a Friend
I can't understand why some critics are falling for "Rushmore," While there is some humor in the portrait of a precocious young wheeler-dealer named Max (Jason Schwartzman) making a brilliant nuisance of himself at Rushmore Academy, the character grated on my nerves after a while. He's a pain, and while one can believe his crush on his older, wiser teacher (Olivia Williams), it's hardly believable that she would have the patience and sympathy for him that she does. Teachers run from students like that.
Likewise, one is hard-pressed to assume for a minute that a businessman (Bill Murray) would become a pal of this twerp. In short, the script by director Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, is juvenile nonsense. The filmmakers provide a bit of fun here and there, but the story becomes increasingly exasperating as it wears on, at least from the perspective of this non-fan. A Touchstone Pictures release.
