THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BED Send This Review to a Friend
It doesn't matter what side of the bed one is on to the collection of men and women dabbling in sexual escapades in this whimsical romantic comedy from Spain by director Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. The object is seduction whether or not fidelity is involved, and don't think that the women are any less roaming than the men. Love and relationships are in play, but what's deceiving a best friend when the lure of sex and novelty is involved?
There's an amusing cast of characters in the breezy romp, with the added twist that the actors break into song at various points. This isn't a new idea, but it works fairly well. One can't say the same for the shoddy choreography that erupts occasionally. What passes for dancing is embarrassing and reminds me of the lumbering choreography I once endured in a Moscow production of "West Side Story," Russian style.
Another negative is the fact that the characters are mostly uninteresting. Their chatter is vacuous and not about much more than their desires and problems. However, they are engaging on a surface level and there are amusing situations and confrontations. The cast includes Guillermo Toledo, Natalia Verbeke, Ernesto Altero, Paz Vega, María Esteve, Ramón Barea and Alberto San Juan. David Serrano wrote the screenplay. A Sundance Channel release.
