FINAL Send This Review to a Friend
It's sci-fi time in a story that deceptively begins as an ordinary face-off between Bill, a patient (played by Denis Leary) in a Connecticut hospital and Ann, a therapist (Hope Davis). Bill doesn't remember who is. The conditions under which he wound up as a patient are murky. He has suspicions that he is there to be killed. What he does know is that he wants to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible. But Ann says he isn't ready and can't leave.
"Final," directed for maximum tension by Campbell Scott from a screenplay by Bruce McIntosh, has the ambience of a play set in a confined area and primarily rooted to a series of confrontations in one hospital room, with occasional venturing outside through flashbacks or supervised walks. Davis is calm but firm as the doctor and Leary is intense as he struggles to make sense of what's happening. He is attracted to Ann and she subtly reveals a growing fondness for him.
But something much more complicated is afoot. Bill is there for a reason and it has nothing to do with his wellbeing. The quality of the acting keeps the drama tight and taut, but once we're plunged into sci-fi territory, the story becomes bizarre and not very convincing. You may begin yearning for the finality promised by the title. A Lions Gate Films and Cowboy Booking International release.
