HAPPY ACCIDENTS Send This Review to a Friend
The plot is about time travel from the future back to the present. Take your own trip to the future. That way you can escape the present of "Happy Accidents," which seems to take forever. True, it has two appealing leads, Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio, but the story may get on your nerves.
Tomei's character of Ruby Weaver is a loser when it comes to men. She and her girlfriends sit around a mope about the oddballs they encounter and the affairs that went bust. They have the ritual of consigning photos of former boyfriends into a box labeled the ex-files. Into Ruby's life plops Sam Deed (D'Onofrio), who is very attentive. But it is soon apparent that he's bonkers. He's convinced that he has time-traveled back from the year 2470 with a mission to save Ruby from the death he knows is coming.
Part of the story unfolds in flashback from Ruby's sessions with her therapist (Holland Taylor). Sam needs help, but so does Ruby. She could actually be in danger because of Sam's warped mind, which is filled with gibberish, unless, of course, you believe in time travel.
Does Ruby really love Sam? Should she run as far away as she can? The angst grows tiresome despite occasional humor, the appeal of the stars and a sympathetic turn by Tovah Feldshuh as Ruby's mother. Writer-director Brad Anderson tries to inject the tale with sincerity and feeling along with suspense, but the end of the film begins to seem further away than 2470. An IFC Films release.
