THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS  Send This Review to a Friend

Call it the fast, the furious and the ridiculous. This flick about drag racers with juiced-up cars and dumbed-down brains has a retarded script just there to service the action, which consists mainly of cars racing along at a speed that's a menace to the drivers and anyone else in sight, plus a story involving use of the cars to hijack trucks. Director Rob Cohen and his crew know how to maximize the action, but everything else is dimwitted, including the macho posturing between gangs and the requisite love interest.

Paul Walker plays Brian, an undercover cop who falls in love with Mia (Jordana Brewster), the sister of one of the guys he's uncovering, Dominic (Vin Diesel). Apart from the highway mayhem, it's all dreary stuff with laughable dialogue. There's also something scary about so much road recklessness. It is just a movie, but one can't help wondering whether there are dumb dudes who'll be inspired to emulate these creeps, and the lawman who pursues them is just as speed-crazy. A Universal Pictures release.
