SNATCH Send This Review to a Friend
Writer-director Guy Ritchie, in addition to becoming Madonna's husband, makes funny movies, one of which was his rollicking British gangster comedy, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels." He's back with another in that nutty vein. "Snatch." is even more convoluted, and perhaps even funnier, as it has a wonderfully oddball group of characters. There isn't much point in trying to explain the plot. You have to be there.
It's the lineup that makes for so much hilarity. For starters, Benicio Del Toro, who is having a great year ("Traffic," "The Pledge") plays Franky Four Fingers, a diamond thief working for Dennis Farina as the unscrupulous Avi. There are also such amusingly named fellows as Boris The Blade ( Rade Sherbedgia), Doug The Head (Mike Reid), Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinny Jones), Brick Top (Alan Ford), Turkish (Jason Statham) and a host of others involved in this British gangland merriment. What would an underworld picture be like without a Sol and Vinny?
None other than Brad Pitt turns up as Irish gypsy hustler Mickey O'Neil, who is hired to throw an illegal bare-knuckled fight on which there is betting with dangerous consequences. But it is against Mickey's nature to lose. There is much action and double-dealing thrown at us, and the anything-goes comedy has is sick moments, all in good fun, of course. You practically need a scorecard to follow it, with surprises coming thick and fast.
"Snatch" should keep you laughing most of the time. A Screen Gems release.
