COLLIDING DREAMS  Send This Review to a Friend

The history of Zionism and the conflicting dreams of Israelis and Palestinians are extensively explored in a wide-ranging documentary co-directed by Joseph Dorman and Oren Rudavsky. In addition to being informative, it is useful as background to the ongoing efforts to solve the problems that keep resulting in violence and accusations.

The film is laden with statements by variouscleaders, political activists, professionals and an assortment of people of all ages with various aspirations. There are historical clips that remind one of milestones in the region, including the military battles.

What is Zionism? The film traces its beginnings, meaning, reason for existence and the road to founding the state of Israel. It also focuses on the fact that the land was occupied and ruled by the British before Israel, spurred by the history of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, could become a nation.

But what of the Palestinians who lived there? The colliding dreams refer to the different perspectives and the conflicts that arose, as well as the needs of people to find a way of living side by side. We get comments and scenes from various viewpoints, and differences within Israel on the part of religious ideology versus the secular.

While the film concentrates more on the Zionist and Israeli viewpoints, partisans on either side will find much to argue about.

The achievement that the film does make is piling on historical exploration and laying out issues, understandings and misunderstandings, all in the context of the security issues Israel faces in being in the midst of those committed to its destruction.

The provocative “Colliding Dreams” is an important film well worth seeing. An International Film Circuit release. Reviewed March 4, 2016.
