CEREMONY  Send This Review to a Friend

I’ve always thought that a film with Uma Thurman in it can’t be all bad. But the hypothesis is severely tested with “Ceremony.” Let’s get to the problem quickly. There is nothing wrong with Thurman as Zoe, a woman getting ready for her marriage to Whit (Lee Pace), a noted documentary filmmaker, in a planned ceremony at a fancy Long Island beachfront estate. The absurdity lies in the plot involving a cipher who has been smitten by Zoe and is bent on trying to talk her out of the marriage.

The love-struck young man is Sam (Michael Angarano), who apparently has a talent for writing children’s books. Seeing the insignificant Sam, as played by Angarano alongside the tall, gorgeous Thurman, makes the idea of her giving up a guy for this twerp utterly ludicrous. If you can’t believe in them as even a potential couple, the whole desperate chase to change Zoe’s plans becomes a non-starter.

There is also a sub-plot involving Sam’s friendship with Marshall (Reece Thompson), and the strain that develops between them. But that seems silly too in the context of the overall story’s stupidity and implausibility. “Ceremony” was written and directed by Max Winkler. A Magnolia Pictures release.
