DIANE SMOOK PHOTOGRAPHS DANCE

Talented photographer Diane Smook haunted dance rehearsals of the Isabel Gotzkowsky and Friends company for session after session to amass a vivid and fascinating collection of photographs, displayed (October 16-November 9, 2003) under the title "Becoming Dance: Images of a Process" at Williamsburg Art Nexus (WAX), 205 North 7th Street, Brooklyn. Smook's portraits are especially strong when she captures the physicality of dance, catching dancers in motion or emphasizing the muscular strengths of their bodies. Some shots convey the intricacies of movement, some snare dancers in a more relaxed moment. In total the collection is dynamic and a tribute to the dancers as well as to the skill of Smook. A reception opening the exhibit was held on Saturday, October 18.
